Prof. Julie Scholes

Back to staff list

Julie is Professor in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences in the University of Sheffield.

Julie’s work involves trying to identify resistance genes against a major parasite (a parasitic plant) which infects the staple cereals of Africa, including maize, sorghum millet and rice. She works at a molecular genetic level to identify resistence genes in cereals and make resistant germplasm available for breeding programmes. She also works extensively in east Africa, where the Department has field trials in farmers’ fields in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in collaboration with colleagues at Africa Rice.
