Dr Anastasia Shesterinina is a Lecturer in Politics and International Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations. After receiving her PhD in Political Science from the University of British Columbia, she was a Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University’s Program on Order, Conflict, and Violence. Anastasia’s field-intensive research examines the dynamics of civil war, including violent mobilization, ex-combatant reintegration, and norms of civilian protection. Her first monograph Mobilizing in Uncertainty: Collective Identities and War in Abkhazia will be published with Cornell University Press in 2021. Her work has appeared in American Political Science Review, Journal of Peace Research, Cambridge Review of International Affairs, and International Peacekeeping. She will take up a £1.2m UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship in January 2021 to explore different paths that civil wars follow and develop practices to sustain peace from pre- to post-war stages.
