Tulika is an architect specialising in intelligent building technologies, age-friendly design and sustainable architecture. Having graduated as an Architect (2008) from India she went on to secure a Master’s degree (2010) with distinction in Sustainable Architectural Studies from the University of Sheffield. She completed her PhD (2014) in architecture from the University of Wolverhampton and developed a statistical predictive model that helps determine a relationship between building intelligence and sustainability. She also trained as a bid developer, funding opportunities expert and research project manager.
Her research interests predominantly lie in using intelligent building technologies as a means of promoting ageing-in-place and achieving energy-efficient, cost-effective and socially sustainable spaces. Tulika’s research and teaching explore varied themes of inclusive design, sustainable design strategies, design for health, well-being, comfort and productivity, impacts of intelligent building technologies on users, energy performance gap and ‘Green’ building rating systems. Her current research is funded by the ESRC and is a Euro-China collaborative project that deals with issues related to population change and ageing in UK, France and China. The ODESSA project contributes to the processes for meeting older people’s needs by exploring the relationships between living arrangements, built environment and the design of care delivery from technological, financial, political and social perspectives.
Prior to joining the University of Sheffield, Tulika worked as a research associate and lectured at the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture, University of Central Lancashire. Earlier in her career she was a Bidding Coordinator at the University of Wolverhampton, where she helped academics write, develop, cost and submit bids to a number of UK and European Research Funding Bodies. She has practiced as an architect for several years and is the co-founder of ‘The Green Labs’, which is a cross-disciplinary consultancy firm in Mumbai, providing integrated design solutions for technologically advanced sustainable buildings.
