Professor Jean Grugel recently took part in the first meeting of the EU-IANUS research project team in Barcelona.

EU-IANUS  is a scientific research project at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI). The project looks on the role of the European Union (EU) as an actor in an unsettled international system. After the relative stability of the post-cold war era the global situation is becoming more volatile again.  The project aims to develop a conceptual framework for the systematic analysis of the changes in the international system and the European integration process in four main areas in which the EU has become an international actor: Trade and Finance, Energy and Environment, Security and Defence Policy, and Human and Social Rights. Based on this framework, the project will explain the variations between the roles played by the EU in these four areas.

The analytical framework for this meeting was developed by Esther Barbé and Oriol Costa and suggestions were brought forward by all participants.  The final version of this will soon be published on

During the meeting plans were also discussed for the future strategy of the project, regarding panels at international conferences and future publications.
