Making Service and Social Justice an explicit commitment in building international partnerships with communities in diverse global contexts: Lessons from California State University, Monterey Bay
Seth Pollack is Professor of Service Learning and the Director of the Service Learning Institute at California State University, Monterey Bay. He is currently a European Union Fulbright Schuman Scholar, conducting an assessment of capacity for social justice oriented engaged teaching, learning and research in European higher education institutions. He is currently based with the Community University Partnership Program at the University of Brighton.
Professor Pollack will provide insights from over twenty years of experience directing one of the leading community-engaged institutions of higher education in the United States. He will provide a background of the basis for the creation of the Service Learning Institute along with the framework that he has developed for engagement with communities. He will discuss Monterey Bay’s work in developing “critical civic literacy competencies,” ensuring that issues of social justice and social responsibility are embedded in the core of the curriculum. He will also share examples of international partnerships, connecting universities with communities in diverse global contexts.
