The Sheffield Institute for International Development (SIID) would like to announce the call for papers and participation in its 9th Annual Postgraduate Conference which will be held on 8th-9th May 2018. The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Development’ in an Uncertain World.
Global uncertainties of, inter alia, climate change, migration crises, political transformation and rising nationalism could transform international development agendas. How does the language and work of “development” fit in this context of global uncertainties? We invite postgraduate students and recently qualified PhDs to present research work that engages with the theoretical, methodological and practical responses to these dynamics across various themes which include but are not limited to:
|Poverty, inequality & injustice||Infrastructure & technology||Health & wellbeing|
|Governance & institutions||Digital innovation & data||Children & education|
|Economy & trade||Urbanisation & development||Gender & sexuality|
|Peace, conflict & migration||Humanitarian assistance||Disability|
|Climate & the environment||Human mobility & security||Sustainability|
This one and a half-day event is geared at providing a supportive academic atmosphere that will facilitate the sharing of current postgraduate research in areas related to International Development. We are keen to hear both academic and practitioner-based research perspectives. You are invited to submit papers for panels consisting of between 3 and 5 closely related 15-20 minute presentations followed by a discussion.
This year will include a special session on how to translate academic knowledge into the action sphere and the conference will coincide with the SIID Annual lecture which boasts an esteemed cohort in International Development. Throughout the conference open forums and networking events will be held. Refreshments will also be provided.
This year’s conference will award prizes to exceptional participants. The best papers will have an opportunity to be guided and supported by SIID staff and journal editors for publication in international journals, subject to appropriateness and peer-review processes. Prizes of £50 each will be awarded to stand out participants who can deliver their paper in an articulate and interesting manner. A number of travel and accommodation bursaries are also available on a limited basis.
How to Participate
Registration will cost £40 per person. This does not include accommodation costs, breakfast or evening meals. Please state whether you wish to apply for either a travel bursary to attend, or an accommodation bursary, or both. Register online now!
