SIID fellow Dr. Tom Goodfellow, Lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, launches his new book Cities and Development this week.

For the first time in human history, more people now live in towns and cities than in rural areas. Current UN projections indicate that virtually all population growth in the world over the next 30 years will be absorbed by towns and cities in developing countries.

Tom’s book ‘Cities and Development’ explores the dynamic relationship between urbanism and development from a global perspective.

The book survey’s a wide range of topics, including: historical origins of world urbanisation; the role cities play in the process of economic development; the nature of urban poverty and the challenge of promoting sustainable livelihoods; and endemic crime, conflict and violence in urban areas.

Tom will be introducing the book with co-author Dr. Sean Fox, from the University of Bristol. Professor Simon Marvin, Director of the new Sheffield Urban Institute, will also be launching his two new books Smart Urbanism and Retrofitting Cities.

The book launch takes place on Wednesday 27th January 2016, from 6pm in the Cafe Area of the Geography and Planning Building on Winter Street. Wine and nibbles will be provided, no pre-booking required.
